Archimedes
Breccia Stazzema marble (Italy) - 12"

Breccia Stazzema comes from the Stazzema Quarries, near Seravezza, Italy.    It is a heterogeneous marble resembling delicate ground moss tinged with green and brown and fragments of various other colors.

The original Archimedes of Syracuse developed one of the fundamental laws of fluid mechanics, specifically that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces.

The piece is named after Archimedes, the tritagonist of 1963 animated feature film, The Sword in the Stone, Disney's interpretation of the Arthurian legend. He is Merlin 's wise, highly educated pet owl who is instrumental in teaching the boy, Arthur, how to become a rightful, noble and conscientious king.
